DPR says network code will address gas infrastructure devt

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) says the recently-inaugurated Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code (NGTCN) will address gas infrastructure development in the country.

According to a statement signed by Mr Paul Osu, Head, Public Affairs, DPR in Lagos on Tuesday, the agency’s Director, Mr Auwalu Sarki, made the assertion during an interaction with stakeholders on Monday.

He said that the NGTCN would ensure rapid expansion of gas transmission systems which was part of the Federal Government’s strategic agenda for “gas to people.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NGTNC, also known as the “Network Code”, was inaugurated on Aug. 10 by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva.

It is a specialised set of rules developed by DPR to guide the implementation of open access transportation system in Nigeria.

The agency noted that connecting the entire country with gas networks such as Escravos Gas Pipeline System (ELPS), Obiafu-Obrikon-Oben (OB3) and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipelines was part of the strategic agenda to bring gas to the people.

Sarki said: “The construction of gas pipelines across the country and the increased investment brought by the NGTCN will create job opportunities for Nigerians.

“It will increase the activities of investors like gas shippers, suppliers, agents on the network and will further promote gas availability, accessibility, affordability and awareness.”

He said that with the achievements of the full implementation of the network code by DPR, it was set to promote and create fair and non-discriminatory open access for gas transportation in Nigeria.

Sarki said it would also promote the accelerated development of the domestic gas sub-sector and ensure right pricing of gas across the value chain, amongst other benefits.

He added that the network code would ensure transparency and predictability in gas trading, thereby stimulating the growth of gas business and deepen performance of the Nigerian gas value chain.
